What is there to see at Göreme Open-Air Museum?
Hermit monks settled around Göreme in the early centuries of Christianity, and monastic life went on here into the Middle Ages: almost every block of rock was carved into a church, a chapel, a refectory or seating. The ministry calls the museum the place where this monastic schooling began. The region was home to the Cappadocian Fathers — Basil of Caesarea, his brother Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory of Nazianzus — and Basil came back to Caesarea (Kayseri) to live as a monk and spread the monastic way of life.
The museum houses the Girls’ and Boys’ Monasteries, St Basil’s Church, the Apple Church (Elmalı), St Barbara’s Church, the Serpent Church (Yılanlı), the Malta Crusader Church, the Dark Church (Karanlık), St Catherine’s Church, the Church of the Sandals (Çarıklı) and the Buckle Church (Tokalı).

About how long the drive is from each town you can stay in, not counting parking and the walk in (plans allow 5 min more for those).
Where is Göreme Open-Air Museum, and how do you get there?
The ministry gives the address of its ticket office as Müze Caddesi, in the Gaferli neighbourhood of Göreme. The planner adds the way there from wherever you stay.

Is it a good plan for a cancelled balloon morning?
Less so than an underground city: you walk between the churches in the open air, and the wind or rain that keeps the balloons down can spoil that walk too.
On a cancelled balloon morning, Plan B starts the day with indoor places until lunch, so this place fits better later that day.
