What Avanos is like
Avanos lies north of Nevşehir on the Kızılırmak, the Red River, which the Ministry of Culture and Tourism says separates it from the rest of Cappadocia.
It is known for its earthenware, made from the river’s red silt in a trade the ministry traces back to the Hittites, and for an old town of cobbled streets. Zelve and the Özkonak underground city are among the places the ministry lists near it.
Can you see the balloons from Avanos?
We have not checked this from Avanos on site, so we promise no view of them. Balloons take off from different places from one morning to the next, depending on the wind, so what you can see from any one spot changes too; and they fly only on mornings cleared under SHGM rules.
