Zelve is a walk from valley to valley rather than a single courtyard, with churches, a mill, a mosque and dovecotes along the way.
What is there to see in Zelve?
Nobody knows exactly when Zelve was first settled. One valley holds a stone mill (seten) once used to make bulgur, the Balıklı and Üzümlü churches and, to the east, a winery; the next holds the Church of the Holy Cross.
The village square lies in the valley beyond, beside a monastery complex carved into a dome-shaped rock and a mosque facing it. Dovecotes cut high into the slopes, their fronts decorated with simple paintings, close the valley, and the Direkli Church stands at its exit.
From your base
About how long the drive is from each town you can stay in, not counting parking and the walk in (plans allow 5 min more for those).
Where is Zelve, and how do you get there?
The ministry lists the site under Aktepe village, in the district of Avanos. Paşabağ, the valley of fairy chimneys, belongs to the same archaeological site.
It is about 9 min by car from Göreme (road route on OpenStreetMap data; © OpenStreetMap contributors), not counting parking and the walk in, and 4 km in a straight line (map points: official and secondary source; © OpenStreetMap contributors).
Does Zelve work on a cancelled balloon morning?
Zelve is an open-air site: you walk outdoors from one valley to the next, so the weather that cancels a balloon flight shapes this visit too.
On a cancelled balloon morning, Plan B starts the day with indoor places until lunch, so this place fits better later that day.
